Our 401k vision began with finding a solution to what we feel are structural flaws with the current 401k system. It is our belief that a total rethinking of 401k's is needed in order to solve the retirement crisis that faces our country.

A recent study by Dalbar showed that individual investors gave away 8% per year of performance due to poor timing and decision making between 1986-2005. During this period, the average equity mutual fund investor returned 3.9% versus an 11.9% annual return for the S&P 500. This chronic underperformance has left novice 401k retirement investors out in the cold while "industry players" have enriched themselves from high fees and profit sharing arrangements. This industry profit motive has led to complete disregard for fiduciary responsibilities and a breakdown in the retirement savings system. The abandonment of the novice retirement investor has led Starboard to create a 401k platform that combines several unique features including; low fees, employee contributions, professional management and fiduciary responsibility.
